The history of the 'Guernsey'
Part of the Guernsey heritage and way of life, its knitting industry dates back to the reign of the first Queen Elizabeth (1558-1603). A hard wearing warm garment is an essential part of any seafaring man's wardrobe, and skills acquired in Guernsey's 17th century stocking industry were adapted to produce just such an item what we now call The Traditional Guernsey. Early styles had patterns so distinctive that it was possible to identify a seafarers origin by the pattern of his 'Guernsey', nowadays the pattern has become standardised to a form instantly recognised and appreciated by those familiar with this highly durable and distinctive garment.
